I’m Andrew Thompson, a freelance journalist with two decades of media and writing experience, based in Cape Town, South Africa.

My writing journey began during my Honour’s year of media studies at the University of Cape Town, when I subsidised my regular (mis)adventures by selling travel articles to local magazines and newspapers.

Not much has changed, rates and lifestyle included, but I’ve since written and photographed thousands of travel features for local and international magazines, websites, and travel guides.

I’m currently the freelance travel writer for News24, South Africa’s largest online news website, and I regularly contribute to various travel sections and publications.

More recently, I’ve channeled my love of business and entrepreneurship into analytical and comparative articles for various financial publications, including Business Insider, Financial Mail, Currency, and News24 Business.

In 2024, I won a regional Vodacom Journalist of the Year Award in the category of Innovation in Journalism for a Financial Mail article exposing price matching between South Africa’s largest online stores.

I also work with global businesses, including e-hailing companies, tourism boards, fintech firms, supermarket groups, and financial institutions, to produce compelling, engaging copy for commercial use. In 2021, a Nedbank campaign I conceptualised and wrote for Brand Story won an IAB Bookmark award for Digital Content Marketing.
